You turn it up for dialogue, then the action scene blows the doors off

You turn the volume up to catch the dialogue, and two minutes later an explosion rattles the walls. So you turn it down — and now you can’t hear the conversation again. This is the single most common complaint people have about modern TVs, and it is the reason most people finally buy a soundbar.

This guide explains what causes that gap and what actually fixes it, from a free setting change to a full surround system. To be clear about the limits of what we can assess: StreamingBeam has not tested any of this hardware. We don’t own an audio lab, and we won’t pretend to. We’re explaining the tradeoffs and citing the reviewers who have done the hands-on work. Why TV dialogue is so hard to hear

There are four reasons this happens, and understanding them is what makes the rest of this guide make sense.

First, modern TVs are too thin to house speakers with real drivers. A speaker is a cone that moves air, and moving air takes physical space. As TV bezels shrank, the speakers behind them shrank with them, until the drivers became too small to push much of anything. On most sets the speakers now fire downward or backward off the wall behind the TV, bouncing the sound off whatever surface is there before it reaches you. That is not a design choice made for sound quality.

Second, dialogue lives in the midrange — the frequencies where the human voice sits — and that is exactly where small drivers are weakest. Small speakers can produce some bass through trickery and some treble through sheer effort, but the midrange is where they struggle most. So the part of the audio you most need to understand comes from the part of the speaker that performs worst.

Third, streaming services compress audio to save bandwidth, and the way dynamic range is handled can widen the gap. A film mixed for a theater has quiet dialogue and very loud effects, and that full range gets squeezed into a compressed stream. When your TV or soundbar applies dynamic range compression — often called ‘night mode’ — it tries to flatten that gap, but it can do so unevenly, leaving dialogue muddy while effects still punch through.

Fourth, a lot of what you watch is mixed for a full surround system with a dedicated center channel that carries dialogue. When that mix gets folded down to the stereo output your TV speakers use, the center-channel dialogue gets summed into left and right, and it loses the clarity that a dedicated speaker would have given it. This is why a separate center channel — or a soundbar that simulates one well — makes more difference to dialogue than any other single upgrade.

The cheapest fix costs nothing

Before spending anything, try the free options. Many TVs have a dialogue or speech-enhancement mode buried in the audio settings — sometimes called ‘Clear Voice,’ ‘Dialogue Enhancer,’ or just ‘Speech.’ It boosts the midrange frequencies where voices live. On some sets it genuinely solves the problem. On others it makes things sound processed and thin, but it costs nothing to try.

Second, check your dynamic range and night-mode settings. Counterintuitively, turning night mode off can help dialogue, because night mode compresses the dynamic range and can muddy the quiet passages. If dialogue is hard to hear, try disabling any compression and letting the full range through — then turn the overall volume down to a level you can live with.

Third, check the audio output format. If your TV is set to output PCM stereo when it could output Dolby Digital or pass through the original format, you may be getting a downmixed, degraded version of the audio. Set the output to ‘Auto’ or ‘Pass-through’ or ‘Dolby Digital Plus’ if your setup supports it. If you have a soundbar or receiver connected over HDMI ARC or eARC, eARC in particular has the bandwidth to pass through uncompressed and Atmos audio that older ARC cannot.

Some people’s entire problem is solved in this section. If yours is, you just saved yourself hundreds of dollars. If it isn’t, the rest of this guide is for you.

If you want a soundbar

The soundbar is the path most people take, and for good reason: it’s a single box that replaces your TV speakers, it’s easy to set up, and even a basic one dramatically improves dialogue. Here are three tiers worth knowing about, with the tradeoffs stated honestly. We haven’t tested any of these — the assessments below come from the reviewers who have.

Budget: Polk Audio Signa S2 — around $249 at Amazon

If your only complaint is dialogue and you want to spend as little as possible, the Polk Audio Signa S2 is the pick. It’s a 2.1 system (soundbar plus wireless subwoofer) built around voice clarity: Polk’s VoiceAdjust technology gives you three levels of dialogue boost, so you can lift voices without turning the whole soundtrack up. It carries over 21,000 Amazon reviews at 4.4 out of 5 stars, and RTINGS reviewed it, calling it “a straightforward 2.1 soundbar” with a dialogue enhancement feature that’s decent for dialogue-centric content. Be honest about the tradeoff: this is a 2.1 system with no surround speakers and no Dolby Atmos. It solves dialogue, not immersion — if you want effects that move around and above you, this is the wrong pick. The newer Polk Signa S4 adds Atmos, but at around $449 it competes with the Hisense and Sony picks below rather than this budget tier.

Mid: Hisense AX5140Q — around $350, often $349.99 at Amazon and Best Buy

This is a 5.1.4 system: the soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, and wireless rear satellites with up-firing drivers, all included. That completeness is unusual at this price. Trusted Reviews made the point that a Sonos or Bose system at similar money leaves you wanting to add a subwoofer and surrounds separately, where the AX5140Q ships with everything in the box. Best Buy buyers rate it 4.4 out of 5.

The honest flaw: Trusted Reviews found the subwoofer has a timing issue that becomes distracting with rhythmically dense music. For movies and TV — which is what most people buy a soundbar for — it’s fine. If you also want to play music through it seriously, that’s the weakness to know about.

Step up: Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 6 — around $498 at Amazon (was $699.99)

If you want better processing and build than the Hisense without jumping to a full surround system, the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 6 is the step-up pick. It’s a 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system with a wireless subwoofer, dual up-firing speakers, and a dedicated center channel for dialogue. RTINGS reviewed it and highlighted its clearer center channel and room-correction feature, noting it needs to be on sale to compete on price — and at $498 (down from its $699.99 list) it is. Mashable called it “big sound, zero hassle.” Best Buy buyers rate it 4.6 out of 5 stars. The honest tradeoff: there are no rear speakers included, so this is a front-only 3.1.2 setup — you get height and center clarity, not true surround behind you. We also considered the JBL Bar 1000MK2, which RTINGS lists in this range, but it currently sells for around $1,200 on Amazon, well above this tier, so we can’t recommend it here.

If you also care about music

Here’s the fork nobody explains, and it matters. Soundbars are optimized for dialogue and effects. If you also listen to music seriously, a stereo pair of proper speakers will outperform a soundbar on music by a wide margin — while still improving TV dialogue over your TV’s built-in speakers.

It’s the one to get if you want a single speaker that genuinely fills a room.

The expansion path is the real point. Two WiiM Sound units pair for true stereo. Add the WiiM Sub Pro for bass. And because WiiM built a proper home-theater mode, pairing with a WiiM Ultra or Amp Ultra lets you assign speakers to center or surround roles in a 5.1 setup. You can start with one speaker and build outward as budget allows — you are not locked into a closed system.

The press coverage is unusually strong for the price. CNET wrote that the WiiM Sound impressed them more than nearly any speaker they had tested. Rolling Stone, Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, and New York Magazine’s Strategist have all reviewed it favorably as well. We’re citing them rather than claiming the sound quality ourselves, because we haven’t heard it.

Be honest about the tradeoff: this path costs more to reach full surround than a 5.1.4 soundbar does, it takes more setup thought, and a single WiiM speaker will not match a 5.1.4 soundbar system for movie effects. Where it wins is music and expandability. If you mostly watch movies and never play music, get a soundbar. If music matters, this is the better answer.

One thing to watch: WiiM has announced the WiiM Bar, a soundbar with expandable 5.1.2 home theater. It is not shipping yet. When it launches, it may close the gap between the two paths — and we’ll update this post then. What about Dolby Atmos from streaming?

This is squarely in our lane, so let’s be specific. Dolby Atmos from streaming is not a single on/off switch — it depends on the service, the plan tier you pay for, and the individual title.

The major services that support Atmos include Netflix, Disney+, Max, Apple TV+, and Paramount+. But availability varies by title, not by service: a service supporting Atmos does not mean every title on it is in Atmos. And several services gate Atmos behind their top-tier plan. Netflix requires its Premium plan for Atmos (and for 4K). Disney+ limits Atmos to its Premium tier; the Basic with Ads plan is capped at 5.1. Max requires its Ultimate tier. Apple TV+ and Paramount+ have broader Atmos support across their plans, but again, only on titles that carry an Atmos mix.

The practical point: you can buy an Atmos-capable soundbar and still not receive Atmos audio, because your plan, your device, or the specific title doesn’t deliver it. If Atmos matters to you, confirm the title actually carries an Atmos track before assuming your new gear is underperforming. And if you’re choosing a streaming plan partly for Atmos, factor the tier cost into the real price of that soundbar.

What to ignore

Marketing copy on soundbars is full of specs that sound important but rarely change what a streaming viewer actually hears.

Channel counts beyond 5.1 — the ‘.2’ or ‘.4’ height channels — only matter if you have the ceiling height and room geometry for sound to bounce meaningfully, and if the content you’re watching actually carries Atmos. In a low-ceiling apartment, the difference between 5.1.2 and 5.1.4 is small.

Peak wattage numbers are nearly meaningless. A 500W peak rating tells you nothing about how clean the sound is at the volume you actually listen at. Total harmonic distortion matters more, and almost no marketing copy leads with it.

‘Wireless’ subwoofers and surrounds are wireless only in the sense that they don’t need a cable back to the soundbar — they still need wall power. Don’t let ‘wireless’ imply you can place them anywhere.

If you’re spending more to chase specs you won’t hear, stop. Put that money toward a better single soundbar or a second speaker for stereo.
