Gifting someone a streaming subscription used to be simple. You bought a gift subscription, they redeemed it, done. Most services have quietly stopped offering that, and almost every guide you'll find online still points you at a page that no longer works the way it describes.

Here's what actually works right now.

The short version

Direct gift subscriptions are mostly gone. What replaced them is the gift card: your recipient applies the balance to their account, and it covers their bill until it runs out. That works whether they're already a subscriber or starting fresh — but the details differ enough between services that buying the wrong card is a real possibility.

Netflix

Netflix gift cards work both ways. Existing members can apply a card to their bill, and non-members can use one to start watching immediately.

This is the most flexible option of the three and the least likely to go wrong. If you know they watch Netflix and you don't know anything else about their setup, this is the safe pick.

Hulu

Hulu works similarly but carries more conditions, and they're worth knowing before you buy.

The card is redeemed at hulu.com/start/gifting by entering the subscription code. The balance then covers the subscription. Existing subscribers can redeem one; so can new ones. Hulu gift subscriptions don't expire.

Four limitations to know:

Premium add-ons aren't covered. A Hulu gift card can't pay for HBO, SHOWTIME, Cinemax, or STARZ add-ons. Those still need a payment method on file.

Third-party billing blocks it. If your recipient pays for Hulu through iTunes, Spotify, or a mobile carrier, they can't apply a gift card at all.

It doesn't cover the bundle. A Hulu gift card only works on a Hulu subscription billed directly by Hulu. It won't apply to Disney+ or the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN bundle. If they're on the bundle, a Hulu card is the wrong gift.

It can't settle what's already owed. A Hulu gift subscription can't be used to pay off an existing balance — only to cover the subscription going forward.

One more thing worth passing along: when the balance runs out, access ends unless another payment method is added, and any remaining balance is forfeited if the subscription is cancelled. That's usually what people want from a gift — no surprise charge — but it's worth saying out loud.

A note on Disney+

Disney is the confusing one right now. Disney's own pages give conflicting guidance on whether a standard Disney Gift Card can be applied to a Disney+ subscription — the Disney+ gift card page says it can be used toward Disney-billed subscriptions, while Disney Store's support page says it cannot be redeemed for a Disney+ subscription at all.

Until that's clearer, check directly with Disney before buying a gift card specifically for Disney+. If you want to gift it with certainty, the annual gift subscription purchased directly from Disney+ doesn't depend on which page you happen to read.

When you don't know what they subscribe to

This is the actual problem with gifting streaming. You know they watch things. You don't know whether they have Netflix, Hulu, both, or neither — and asking ruins the surprise.
