The Best Video Game Adaptations Streaming Right Now

The Best Video Game Adaptations Streaming Right Now

For twenty years, "video game movie" was a warning label. Then a handful of projects figured out what everyone before them had missed: don't retell the game. Build something new inside its world.

Here's what's worth watching, and where each one lives.

Fallout β€” Prime Video

The best argument for the whole category. Rather than adapting any single game, it tells an original story set long after the Great War of 2077, following Lucy out of her vault and into a wasteland that looks exactly like the one players remember.

What makes it work is tone. The retro-futuristic production design uses practical effects, so the world feels inhabited rather than rendered, and the dark comedy never undercuts the horror. Walton Goggins as The Ghoul is the performance people talk about.

Season two has aired. A third is confirmed.

Arcane β€” Netflix

The one critics rate highest. Two seasons, both at a perfect critics score, built from League of Legends β€” a game with essentially no story to adapt.

That turned out to be the advantage. With no plot to be faithful to, the writers built one: two sisters on opposite sides of a class war between a gleaming city and the undercity beneath it. The animation is unlike anything else on television.

You don't need to know the game. Most of the audience didn't.

The Last of Us β€” HBO Max

The show that proved prestige television could take a game seriously. A smuggler escorts a teenage girl across a collapsed United States, and the emotional weight lands the same way it did for players β€” partly because the game's original creative team stayed involved.

The episodes people remember most are the quiet ones.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The commercial ceiling for the category. It made over $1.3 billion, became the highest-grossing video game film ever made, and did it by being exactly what it looks like: bright, fast, and built for families.

The sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, opened in April 2026 to the biggest box office debut of the year.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The franchise that quietly got good. The first film was fine; the sequels found their footing, leaning into the character's speed and humor and treating the source material with more affection than the early attempts ever did.

Worth noting for accuracy: Sonic is a Sega character, not Nintendo β€” though the modern games run on Switch alongside everything else.

PokΓ©mon

The longest-running adaptation of them all, and the one that shaped how a generation understood the franchise. Decades of series and films, with the strength varying wildly across eras.

Where to start

Never played any of them: Arcane. Least outside knowledge required, most complete piece of work.

Want live-action prestige drama: The Last of Us.

Watching with kids: Mario.

Want something that's just fun: Fallout.

When the show makes you want to play the game

It happens constantly. Someone finishes Fallout, likes it, and finds out there are seven games behind it. Or watches Arcane and wants to know what Runeterra actually is.

A store gift card is the cleanest way to hand that to someone β€” no guessing which platform they're on or which edition to buy.

Xbox gift cards β†’ for Fallout, Game Pass, and most of the back catalog.

Nintendo eShop cards β†’ for Mario, PokΓ©mon, and Sonic on Switch.

PlayStation cards β†’ for The Last of Us, where the series started.
